Accused of Espionage, Gershkovich Faces Trial in Russian Court
Evan Gershkovich, a prominent American journalist and reporter for The Wall Street Journal, has been detained by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) and charged with espionage. The journalist was taken into custody in Moscow on August 25, 2023, while reporting on the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Gershkovich has been reporting on Russia for The Wall Street Journal since 2018 and has published numerous articles on Russian politics, economics, and foreign relations. He was widely praised for his in-depth reporting on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The FSB has accused Gershkovich of "illegal intelligence gathering" and "espionage," alleging that he obtained classified information from Russian government sources. The charges carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
The United States government has condemned Gershkovich's detention and called for his immediate release. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the United States "stands with Evan Gershkovich and all journalists around the world who are unjustly detained for doing their jobs."
