Mississippi State Announces Firing of Head Football Coach Zach Arnett
Former Defensive Coordinator Takes Over as Interim Coach
University of Mississippi Analyst Zachary Arnett Fired After One Season
Starkville, Mississippi - Mississippi State University has announced the firing of head football coach Zach Arnett after just one season at the helm. Arnett, who previously served as the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator, was named interim head coach in December 2022 following the tragic passing of Mike Leach.
Arnett's tenure as head coach was marked by a 3-9 record, including a 1-7 record in SEC play. The Bulldogs struggled defensively, ranking near the bottom of the conference in several key metrics.
"This was a difficult decision, but one that we believe is in the best interests of our football program," said MSU Athletic Director John Cohen. "Zach Arnett is a proven leader, but we did not see the progress we expected this season."
Offensive coordinator Kevin Barbay will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2023 season. The university has not yet announced plans for a permanent replacement for Arnett.
Arnett's firing marks the end of a short and tumultuous chapter in Mississippi State football history. The Bulldogs will now look to find a new head coach who can lead the program to a brighter future.
